Double-Design

The Future of Architecture?

Biography

I was born in 1939 and educated at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith, London, at University College, London, at the University of California, Berkeley and at the University of Plymouth, UK.

An experienced Architect and Planner, I have been responsible for the design and construction supervision of over one and a quarter million square meters of buildings worldwide, as well as master plans for cities, hospitals, and universities.

I have held teaching appointments at University College, London, Washington University, St. Louis, Kuwait University,  Gulf University for Science and Technology, Kuwait, and the University of Plymouth.

My research activities cover the growth, change and ageing of hospitals (University College, London ), accidents in the home as indicators of environmental performance (Institute of Urban & Regional Development, University of California, Berkeley), the evaluation of social action programmes (UK Home Office), and spatial robustness (University of Plymouth).

Exhibitions of my paintings have been held in Kuwait and Mexico.

Based on my professional experience and my doctoral thesis, my book, titled “Double-Design for Durable Architecture: Long-life fabric and Function for the Democratisation of Space,” is to be published by Routledge in 2025.
